As Tennant continues its legacy of leadership in sustainability, we’re proud to announce our plan to become net-zero by 2040. These goals and a letter of commitment have been submitted to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for validation.

What is Net-Zero?

The UN defines net-zero as cutting global greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions able to be re-absorbed from the atmosphere (by oceans and forests, for instance.) (Source: United Nations Climate Action)

For companies, this means setting corporate targets that reduce impacts on the climate. Those targets must align with the latest climate science, which says we must set GHG reduction targets limiting warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. To reach our net-zero targets, Tennant plans to make deep emissions cuts across its operations and value chain, which will include:

  • Partnering with customers to increase the energy efficiency of Tennant’s portfolio and offer solutions that will eliminate GHG emissions during the product’s use phase by 2040.
  • Sourcing 100% of electricity from renewable sources across all global facilities by 2030.
  • Electrifying 100% of the global fleet by 2040.
  • Continuing to invest in energy efficiency initiatives in its facilities and across its operations.
  • Collaborating with external groups to drive innovation and technology development to lead the industry toward a cleaner future.

“As a market leader with a reputation for innovation, I’m confident that we can work towards ambitious commitments to affect change on a global scale.”

Dave Huml - President and CEO of Tennant Company

“By embedding sustainable thinking into how we work, we’ll continue to deliver solutions that help our customers solve their biggest challenges and meet their sustainability targets. Working within our own business and with our stakeholders, we will help people thrive and contribute to a healthier planet.”

Along with the net-zero goals we introduced a new framework to further embed sustainability across our business and redefine the traditional siloed-sustainability operating model. Through this new framework, Tennant will drive progress in six key impact areas within two pillars:

Thriving People

Employee Success:

Ensure the health, safety, well-being, and development of all employees and continually support diversity, equity, and inclusion in our company.

Social Impact:

Help to improve the lives of people we engage with outside of our company, including the workers in our supply chain, the operators who use our products, and the local communities where we operate.

Shared Spaces:

Partner with our customers and other stakeholders as we reinvent how the world cleans to enhance the health, safety, and well-being for all who use and rely on our collective and shared spaces.

Healthy Planet

Climate & Energy:

Contribute to global decarbonization by achieving net-zero GHG emissions in our operations and reducing emissions in our supply chain. Increase our product energy efficiency and offer our customers solutions that will eliminate GHG emissions from the use of our products.

Water & Chemical Use:

Improve water stewardship in our operations and continually strive to design products that require fewer cleaning chemicals and reduce water use while cleaning.

Circular Products & Waste:

Design our products to enhance the ability to repair, service, replace parts, recycle, and recover materials, alongside services and manufacturing processes that reduce waste and help close the loop on the lifecycle of our products.
