Do Electronics Use Energy When They're Off?

Cell phone chargers. Coffee Makers. Toasters. Computers. While they may not be what you normally think of when you hear the word, they are a type of vampire. According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, “Energy vampires are electronic devices that use standby power, which means they keep drawing power even when they are turned off.”

Ways to Reduce Vampire Electricity Consumption

Below are a few easy things you can do to slay the energy vampires in your home or office:

  • Unplug electronics that you don’t use often.
  • Use a surge protector to easily turn off a group of electronic devices.
  • Purchase a “smart” power strip to turn off power to devices in standby mode.
  • If a device or appliance can’t be turned off or unplugged, look for and purchase items with an Energy Star label.
